Legal Structure
The California Transit Association is a California Nonprofit Mutual Benefit Corporation filed with the IRS as a 501(c)(6)- "Business League." A business league is an association of persons having some common business interest, the purpose of which is to promote such common interest and not to engage in a regular business of a kind ordinarily carried on for profit. Trade associations and professional associations are business leagues. This tax status grants the Association exemption from most state/federal income taxes and allows the Association to further the purpose of its members through lobbying as a primary activity.
