Mountain students could be losing ride to school if VTA cancels service

The cash-strapped Valley Transportation Authority's board of directors is scheduled to take up the controversial proposal to cut bus and light rail service at its Oct. 1 meeting, so those concerned about the cutbacks have until then to submit comments to the VTA. The bus that takes students who live in the Santa Cruz Mountains to Los Gatos High School is one of the routes that VTA is considering eliminating. VTA, which depends heavily on sales tax revenue, is facing an 8 percent reduction in services due to declining revenues in recent years. Line 76, which runs from the Los Gatos Civic Center to several destinations off of Summit Road, operates only during the school year... Virtually no public service has been spared in California's fiscal crisis. Schools, law enforcement, health and human services, parks, environmental protection have all taken hits. Transit is no exception. Compared with other states with large urban populations, California's support for public bus, train and ferry systems has always been deficient. But the last budget approved by the Legislature eliminated support for local transit systems entirely. A robust public transit system is essential if California is ever going to responsibly absorb the population growth that is coming, reduce demand for oil and cut air pollution.

Public hearings planned on AC Transit bid to cut service 15%

Faced with a deficit that could grow to as much as $57 million by the end of the current fiscal year, the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District will hold a series of 10 public forums starting next week about its plan to reduce service by 15 percent. The bus district had five public forums in May to receive suggestions from riders about ways to cut service so it can live within its budget.

Give OCTA Your Input - OCTA is starting to plan how to make the next round of cuts in bus service scheduled to come in March 2010. OCTA is having to cut bus service because the State did not fund public transportation this year. This cut by the State left OCTA, along with many other public transportation services, trying to fill an unexpected void in funding. OCTA will be having community meetings to receive feedback on proposed plans for service cuts.
