New Budget Plan Seeks Another Round of Devastating Cuts
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today released a revised state budget plan for 2008-09 that proposes a 75 percent cut in public transit funding beyond the already-dire levels included in the spending plan that was adopted just six weeks ago.
Fueled by projections that the budget signed in September is already out of balance by as much as $10 billion, the governor called for a Special Legislative Session, summoning lawmakers back to Sacramento beginning November 5 to re-work the budget. As part of the process, the administration released a revised budget proposal that would slash another $230 million from the State Transit Assistance program.
The budget passed in September already raided $1.7 billion dollars from the Public Transportation Account to cover other, non-transit holes in the General Fund. The net result of the governor's newest proposal would leave just $76 million in state transit funding at a time when demand for transit services is skyrocketing to record-breaking levels in California and across the nation.
