  Funding Update |  January 29, 2010

*ACTION ALERT!*

Contact your Legislative Delegation to Oppose the Governor's Proposals

Call your legislative delegation as soon as possible to express your opposition to the governor's catastrophic 2010-11 budget proposal that completely eliminates state funding for public transportation.

The governor's 2010-11 budget proposal, which was released earlier this month, abolishes the core revenue sources of the Public Transportation Account (PTA): spillover, the sales tax on gasoline (Prop 42), the sales tax on diesel, and the sales tax on 9 cents of the excise tax (Prop 111) -- a total of $1.586 billion from all four sources.

Please click here to access the governor’s budget and click here to view our summary on the governor's “gas tax swap."

When you contact your delegation, its helpful to include any new information you might have on service cuts, fare increases, or jobs lost as pertaining to your agency. Please click here to view the Association's letter to the legislative leaders opposing the budget proposal. You may use the points made in the letter as a guide for speaking with your legislators on why this budget proposal should not be adopted.

Please Register for our 2010 Transit Lobby Day and Ballot Workshop -- Your Participation Will Decide Transit's Fate

It is vital that all members of the Association participate in this year’s annual event! Transit Lobby Day is scheduled for March 10th in Sacramento. The governor's proposal to eliminate state funding for transit means that we need your help and your voice now more than ever.

We will be making appointments with all 120 legislators, as well as representatives of Governor Schwarzenegger. We strongly encourage you to send a team of transit supporters from your agency to lobby these officials about the importance of public transit and supporting our efforts to protect transit revenues. Association staff is currently in the process of setting up meetings with as many officials as possible for this day. We will assign teams to meet with each legislator, therefore the greatest number of transit attendees, the better!

As part of this year's Transit Lobby Day events, we are holding a ballot workshop on March 9th in Sacramento. We are currently working with the Center for Transportation Excellence to present a California Ballot Workshop as part of the Transit Lobby Day program. The workshop will provide key insight and valuable tools for conducting local transit funding ballot measure campaigns, as well as our own planned statewide initiative effort. Visit our home page at www.caltransit.org to register for Transit Lobby Day and the California Ballot Workshop.
