AC Transit Gets Support for Plan to Scale Back Bus Service Cuts

Top advisers to a powerful Bay Area transportation commission have recommended approval of AC Transit's proposal to minimize bus service cuts by reallocating $35 million in federal funds earmarked for a planned bus rapid transit service in Oakland, Berkeley and San Leandro. In a report to be presented today, Metropolitan Transportation Commission staff members will back the funding shift that would enable AC Transit to limit the severity of bus service cuts to an 8.4 percent reduction instead of slashing 15 percent.

Transit Advocates Will Push Lawmakers to Rethink Transit Cuts

At California State Assembly Committee on Transportation meetings this morning and Tuesday, the California Transit Association (CTA) and public transit agency representatives will discuss the challenges that state funding cuts have imposed on transit providers.  The CTA especially hopes to alert lawmakers to the reality that future cuts would undermine California's greenhouse gas reduction goals set out in the state's landmark greenhouse gas reduction bills, AB 32 and SB 375 - a disconnect that even some environmentally-conscious lawmakers seem to overlook. "The Governor and the Legislature have received ample praise for adopting these measures to reduce emissions and promote smart-growth planning, and deservedly so," said CTA Executive Director Joshua Shaw in a prepared statement. "But the goals of these measures cannot be achieved without a commitment to stable funding for transit - the one program we have in place that is best-equipped to help meet these goals."

Transit Coalition to Metrolink:
'Fare Increases, Not Service Cuts, Are the Least Painful'

A transit lobbying group today released their formal position on budget-saving Metrolink proposals to either raise fares or jettison more than 50 trains from its schedule, which included canceling Orange County Weekend Service and a variety of other trains. Bart Reed, the Executive Director of The Transit Coalition, said fare increases would better serve ridership.
